The ancient Greeks believed that somewhere in the world, the gods calm the storms of winter so that descendants of Alcyon, the once-human kingfisher, can lay their eggs on still waters. The sun shines for seven days before and seven days after the longest night of the year. No breath of wind stirs the waves as the kingfishers brood over their nests. When the young birds hatch, the spell is broken; but each year two weeks of peace, creativity, and prosperity come. These are the Halcyon Days.
