THE CHALLENGE - FIND RECORD FOR THOMAS HARBOUR PRIOR TO YEAR 1727

Wayne Witt Bates

The first known record for Thomas Harbour was in 1727, which referred to him as being "of Hanover Co." Surely, there are other records covering Thomas Harbour previous to year 1727. Book "Harbours In America," dated 1982, suggests his record is hidden under like sounding names similar to Harbour. A search for Thomas Harbour should be made by looking for like sounding names, and such search should center on Charles City County, where his wife Sarah Witt was born. Then, search for like sounding names should continue in adjoining counties, such as Henrico Co. Goochland Co. (cutoff from Henrico in 1728) New Kent Co. Hanover Co. (cutoff from New Kent Co. in 1721) The first known record for Thomas Harbour was in year 1727, which located him in Hanover Co. And in the next year, in 1728 Thomas Harbour had record in Goochland Co., where his father-in-law John Witt II had land beginning in 1715.

The most promising name to research would be Herbert, though like sounding names similar to Harbour are numerous. In error, the name of Thomas Harbour has been transcribed as Harcourt and Hubbart. These two instances are cited:

1. 1745 Albemarle Co. Deed, Thomas Harbour transcribed as Thomas Harcourt.
2. 1777 Henry Co. "Oath of allegiance," Thomas Harbour transcribed as Thomas Hubbart.

Look at the placement of the name Thomas Hubbart on the Rolls of the 1777 "Oaths of Allegiance." Thomas Hubbart follows name of John Jonokiin (Jarnagin), who was husband of Witt descendant, and who bought 50 acres of the Thomas Harbour homeplace in 1777; and Thomas Hubbart name is right above name of Elisha Harbour, the son of Thomas Harbour.

The Challenge is to find record for Thomas Harbour prior to year 1727. He had children born around 1715, so he was around about someplace.
